Tips On Doing Better In Search Engines
I recently received a newsletter from another forum that I frequent that complained about a competing website topping the SERPs for a particular set of keywords with no supporting page content other than the keywords found in the URL. This came as an incredible shock to the newsletter's author, but I suggest here that it's not that surprising at all. And it's important not to jump to the wrong conclusions about either the value of page content optimization or keyword-laiden web addresses.
From a SEO perspective, some may wonder how it's possible for a website to climb to the top of SERPs on keywords in the domain alone. But the key is to realize that this is not what's happening. What's happening is as suggested above: Backlinks are important for websites and well worth your time and effort in developing them. This reality has been thoroughly tested and proven that backlinks to your website can have a dramatic impact on how well your site does in SERPs, even with little or no keyword content in the landing pages. It's just a coincidence that the URL of the particular site discussed in the newsletter had keywords. The site would be doing just as well without them.
A small caution here is that backlinks are not everything. Though they have incredible sway, two websites equally represented by backlinks would find significant discrepencies in pagerank if one was properly optimized with respect to page content as well. Ultimately, it boils down to where one's promotional energies and earnings are invested. What's nice about page optimization is that once it's done, it tends to remain done, even with updating. Developing backlinks, however, can go on and on. Take care of the page optimization first, and the backlinking and it's enormous benefits are all butter.
Final Note:
Beware of reciprocal directory and competitor link exchange submissions, as they are being devalued more and more because of exploitation. Genuine one-way links (backlinks) are of significantly greater value. Reciprocated link trading, in some cases, can actually have a negetive impact on your website. Take great care in their application.
Good luck,
The Lion.
