Hey my name is Tony, I'm a Senior in Highschool and i want to have some experience in Web designing and graphic design before i go off to college. I'm very interested in web design especially. If any one could pm me back with helpful information and websites(that don't ask for money) I would appreciate it so much. I'm doing photo shop tutorials right now and I have been practicing my basic html codes. Whatever help or information you have on web and graphic design will be highly appreciated. Hey! you've came to the right place. Ive been pursing a career since I was around 11 or 12 and just recently was hired on with Pinnacle Innovations(I am a high school junior). So hey, if this is what you want to do, keep pursuing it. If you plan on making a career with this, you must know it is not a high paying job. The best web designers make around 75 grand per year (give or take). If its your passion go for it.

The Internet is literally choked with information about how to design websites. But I should tell you that there are no abbreviated programs out there designed to help you learn this stuff overnight. If you really want to learn about web design, you must have a need to design.

Now I'm not talking about passion. Judging from your posts, passion you have plenty of. The 'need' I'm refer to is a practical one. Get yourself some server space and go ahead and develop a website entirely by code. I recommend building a personal resume site. That way you have something important to do and will always have a reason to add to it as you learn more about web design. Next, you already have an HTML editor in 'Notepad', so you'll need an 'ftp' program to upload your work to the server. I recommend 'SmartFTP.' It's cheap and powerful and well supported.

After that, the only other thing you may need is some flash software, as you already have photoshop happening for you. I recommend 'KoolMoves' for the same reason I like 'SmartFTP'. It's cheap and powerful. 'SmartFTP' runs about $35 with a free trial period (I'm sure they still offer this); and 'KoolMoves' runs about $60 (Maybe more. It's been years since I first purchased it). But with this combination of software, you really will have a strong foundation for getting into web design.

Now Back To Your Need

As long as you know how to start an HTML page (i.e. HTML tags, title, header tags, body, etc) you can learn the rest simply by understanding that whatever you want to have happen on the screen CAN BE DONE. You see something you like, you make it happen by either figuring it out for yourself or researching it and learning how to do it via Internet searches.

Rest assured, there is no larger field on the Internet than web design (rivaled, probably, only by porn). Anything you see, you can find info on how to put it on your site. But if I were you, I'd search out a good HTML reference guide ('Paul McFedries' comes to mind). After that, it's just research and reading through all the cool stuff you'll find. If you take this stuff in college, believe me, you'll be amazing by the time you graduate.

You're only at the beginning of it all, so it's difficult to direct you any further than this. Once you've started and can actually post something to the web, and get some graphics up with a link or two both internally and externally, the answers you're looking for will present themselves as you need them.

eztrader and ophelia33. I attended college for 6 years and have a degree in Computer Science. Like mentioned above, learning how to code websites is pretty much a never ending job. I think you can learn basic html from books and the Web but to really grasp Java or Javascript you really need to either take courses or learn from someone who knows it. It's pretty hard to learn on your own.

If you wish to be a pro at coding web pages, you should know how to program in Java. It's a little difficult to get at first but if it's something you enjoy, learning is fun. But for now, concentrate on learning the basics of html and how to use and create a css file in conjunction with your html website. That is most definitely your beginning point.

Notice I have been saying the word code and not design. There is a difference between the two. If you want to be good with websites, you need to know how to both code a website and design a website. The two differ.

Coding involves learning html and some programming language, such as Java.

Designing is quite different. Designing involves understanding how to display the site you are coding (put this picture there, make this text large here, make a link over there, etc.). Do not ignore this part as it is essential to be a good web designer in addition to a good programmer.

You want to be able to design a website in a way that appeals to human online behaviors so that one day when you do become a web designer people will seek you out not because you know how to code html, but because you know how to create them a website that brings them in some cash.

This website is incredible. I recommend reading the HTML, then the XHTML, and finally the CSS sections. Go on to the JavaScript modules when you're ready. It's a serious education for beginners interested in tackling this field. I don't think there is honestly a better starter resource on the Internet.
